I know how real the struggle is to workout consistently. It’s sooooooo easy to make an excuse NOT to do it. We can pull from hundreds of reasons why we can’t do that workout today or why it’s okay to skip it. You may be struggling because you want results NOW, you do not have a community to surround yourself with and you just need a simple shift in perspective.
The MIND can come up with ANYTHING to avoid creating a NEW habit.
Do any of these sound familiar?? “I’m so tired this morning, my body needs rest.” “I don’t have time this morning, I will do it after work.” “My kids are crawling all over me, how can I even get a good workout in?”“My baby slept awful last night so I don’t have the energy.” “I’ve been slacking so skipping another day won’t make much of a difference anyways.”
It’s not really working out that is HARD.
It’s creating a new routine that you have so much resistance too. Here’s the thing…. All of those ‘excuses’ can and are legit. If you need a rest day, TAKE IT!! I am not saying you can’t. What I am saying is to become aware of how easy it is to derail from a new routine you actually really want to create.
In my opinion it takes way longer to create a habit than just 21 days. It takes at least 3 months, sometimes even longer. Everyone is different. Creating a habit can feel HARD at first, but keep in mind that each day is a step in the right direction. What takes effort in the beginning soon becomes effortless!
Surround yourself with other motivated people who keep you accountable.
We want to do things like this alone, because when we fall off we don’t want to face the accountability of someone else. But that’s an old belief… the thought that we have to do it all alone. Creating new habits is best done with a community you can lean on and who can lean on you!
Find a community of like-minded people that will SUPPORT you when you want to skip instead of beating you down.
You beat down on yourself enough, you don’t need anyone else helping you with that! A community and positive environment are so important for success.
The accountability is not about “you’re bad because you skipped a day” it’s more about “we love you and want you to stay committed to your goals, so we are here to lift you back up!!”
It’s time to shift your perspective on working out.
Are you doing too much at once? Trying to change every bad habit you have? Well, I am going to tell you right now, that works for very few people! I work with many women on creating new habits – with fitness, food and mindset – and I can honestly say that starting off with a focus on consistent workouts will always lead to more healthy habits. Working out is a gateway to the healthier lifestyle you have always seen yourself living.
Working out is a way to love yourself, not punish yourself. You GET to move your body.
This is a choice you are making, not an obligation. Too often we feel obligated to lose weight and end up doing it for the wrong reasons, which leads to resentment and the habits never stick. It’s tempting here to make goals for weight loss, but I’ve seen clients have better success by first focusing on creating a habit. “I will workout X number of days this week.”
I find we, as women, put so much pressure on ourselves when we first start that it gets so overwhelming that we end up crushing under the pressure of our goals!
Each day when you decide if you will workout or not, consider these things.
- If you want to skip out on your workout, take a moment to really think about the reason why and if it’s REAL or just a reason to derail from your commitment.
- Give yourself grace!!! Even if you derail/skip, it does not mean you have failed and it’s over. You always have tomorrow to start again!
- Shift your story from ‘working out is hard’ to reminding yourself everyday that creating a new habit is a current struggle you are willing to work hard to overcome!
- Instead of thinking ‘I have to workout….’ shift your thoughts to a place of gratitude because you GET to workout and show your self love for everything your body is capable of doing.
I get this question all the time… How do you fit in your workout at home with your 4 kids?????
Let me tell you, it hasn’t always been easy! But after years of staying the course and being committed, I’ve created a pretty good routine that’s just second nature to me now.
I guess that’s why creating a lifelong habit is so beneficial – it just becomes part of your normal and who you are.I decided to commit to a routine, commit to my health and most of all, commit to being a good example to my kids! I love that they get to see my husband and I taking care of ourselves – it’s a huge reason WHY I hit play everyday.
Last piece of advice… If you’ve found yourself starting and stopping a million times maybe it’s time to switch up your perspective.
Instead of looking at the destination, look at each baby step in front of you.
One day at a time, one foot in front of the other. Just doing the work and enjoying the process will bring so much more joy to your workouts and your life!
