In this episode, I am joined by Sasha Heinz, Ph.D. to discuss the importance of adult development, the effects of the pandemic, and the raw truth about how your thoughts affect your actions and how to overcome them.
Show Notes:
00:50 Adult & Cognitive Development
Sasha Heinz is a development scientist and mindset coach. That may seem like a weird combo, but they are actually quite related. The work of adult development is very much the work of your cognitive development and gaining perspective (letting go and evolving). She helps people get out of their own way.
4:00 The Effect of the Pandemic On The World
Sasha uses the SCARF acronym to describe how people deal with fear and uncertainty.
S = Status
C = Certainty
A = Autonomies
R = Relationships
F = Fairness
When you look at these, you can decide which of these affect you most. For me, I’ve noticed myself caring more about certain things that I can’t be quiet about.
15:08 The Truth About Your Thoughts
Many people have negativity, doubt, and fear in their thoughts. The truth is that our thoughts are made up based on our external experiences throughout our lives. You’re creating a reality & result based on the thoughts in your brain, but not based on the reality of the situation.
23:25 How to Change Your Thoughts
There are countless examples of how the statement you’re thinking is inaccurate. If you’re dealing with thoughts about a situation that aren’t serving you, looking for social proof can be a very safe and easy way to test your assumption. In order to REALLY step into the fuller version of you, you HAVE to be willing to do some digging.
35:30 “But What If It Doesn’t Work For Me”
We first need to say “thank you” to our thoughts for letting us stay in our cozy and warm spot. Then, you need to decide if you’re willing to try and risk feeling disappointed and failing. The answer may be no, but when the answer is finally yes, you need to give it a try.
41:50 The Destination Mindset
We sometimes have thoughts that there is a destination that I need to get to, and then I can stop. However, when you don’t have a destination and you simply commit to the process, that’s where SO much growth happens.
46:12 Adult Development is Important
The work of adult development is SO important and it is relegated to the cheesiest aisle in the book store. Child development matters, but so does adult development. The only mistake you can make is not engaging in the process and giving up on being a more mature, sophisticated version of yourself 10 years from now.
