Show Notes:
02:20 Playing with Schedules
Time freedom and being able to shift your schedule when you need to is one of the beauties of entrepreneurship. Mark and I chat about what it looks like to structure and play with your schedule to see what works best for our life and energy levels in that current season of life.
10:25 Culture Clash
Mark had an epiphany when he realized that he was an entrepreneur who had built his business on a corporate structure. There was a culture clash when working with corporate clients in an entrepreneurship setting. When the pandemic happened, Mark’s corporate clients put things on pause and he started spending more time around other entrepreneurs. This created a dynamic environment of understanding, freedom and possibility.
15:35 The Power of the Room You’re in
Mark tells a story about being depressed and feeling like he wasn’t good enough in his business. A member of his team offered him support and gave him permission to realize why he was feeling the way he was. He got invited to the Tony Robbins show, and realized as he entered, that he was in the VIP diamond lounge with an elite group of people. They accepted him as one of them, and this experience showed him the importance of the room you’re in and the conversations you’re having.
24:32 Your Problems Are Not Unique
There was a discovery that people with higher self-esteem are less likely to fall into crime, leading to the self-esteem movement starting in the 1970s. Everyone was told that they were special. Mark has learned that we are not special and our problems are not unique. Many people have experienced hardship and trauma and they still went on to do something. We need to stop using those hardships as excuses. Mark encourages people to take a cold hard look at what you’re choosing.
30:11 Truth Love
Mark’s team was making some changes to the podcast that were taking longer than planned. A friend called him and gave him some truth love that pushed him to release content in the meantime. It was a wake up call that he was letting excuses hold him back. Everybody needs someone in their life that will tell it like it is.
34:25 We Do Hard Things
We live in a world where people want the easy option and hard is demonized. In Mark’s “We Do Hard Things” Podcast, he wanted to surround himself with driven people who have pushed through. He has marveled at courage and used it as inspiration for himself to face fears, take risks and live in a bold way.
43:45 The One that Breaks the Cycle
Mark tells a story about helping behind the scenes at a friend’s book launch. In this book, “The Power of One More”, the author talks about how there’s always one person who breaks the cycle and changes the entire future for everyone in their life. If you are willing to do the work and grow, chances are, you are that person. I expand on this idea of reframing pressure with purpose.
49:47 Crying on the Treadmill
A driving force in Mark’s life is thinking about the worst thing that could happen and using it to motivate his actions for the opposite outcome. For example, what if he never got the chance to meet his grandchildren? He uses this to motivate his health journey to work towards a life of greater longevity. He reminds himself that he wants to meet his grandkids and attaches that meaning to his goals.
